How are this week’s vocabulary words used in the article posted below?  Do you understand what you read?

Tips for Earning a Promotion

Many people have been asking us for advice on advancing their careers.  We took it upon ourselves to investigate by asking bosses what they looked for when they promoted their employees.  Some of the advice may contrast with tips you’ve heard, but, take it from us, these are the new workplace rules.  We predict they will serve you well.

  • Gradually ask to undertake bigger projects and more responsibilities in your current position.  Not only does this circulate your name around the office, it also confers your commitment to your job to the higher ups.

  • Don’t shirk your shortcomings.  In the past it may have been common to place blame when a project failed, but no more.  It is very important not to implicate anyone else if you made a mistake.  By accepting the blame and the punishment, you will emerge as a true leader which is someone who stands by his or her decisions.

  • Listen to your team and play nice.  The best managers don’t steamroll people.  Instead, they integrate the best ideas from their team to get the best results.  Additionally, they motivate their co-workers by granting that they didn’t reach success on their own.  These morale boosters help these leaders retain and recruit the best staff.
