"A mother's reading skill is the greatest determinant of her children's future academic success, outweighing other factors, such as neighborhood or family income." Unfortunately, for many immigrant women in Oakland, reading in English (an in some cases, any language) is impossible. Whether because of family obligations, gender discrimination, or interrupted education, many never gained literacy skills. Additionally, because of budget cuts, the free or low-cost classes available for these adult students have been slashed throughout the Bay Area.
To address this problem, East Bay ESL has designed a sponsored class for low-income, non-literate immigrant women in Oakland. We will bring the supplies, teachers, and even child care providers. All we need now are some sponsors. The tuition and childcare fee for one adult student cost $225 for a semester. Click here to contribute: http://www.gofundme.com/teach-reading.
